Plays

4th Line Theatre’s 2010 season offers a world premiere and the return of a wildly successful production from last year. Both productions were developed by the company’s New Play Development Program which fosters new works with a view to a final staging at the Winslow Farm. “We are proud and excited to present both these plays, the return of The Right Road to Pontypool and the world premiere of Eldorado Town - The Port Hope Play. These are the stories of real places and people in our community,” says Founding Artistic Director Robert Winslow.

From the radium craze of the 1930s to the beginnings of the Cold War, Eldorado Town - The Port Hope Play examines how a small Ontario town played a significant role in ending WW II and in the coming of the nuclear age. Playwright Charles Hayter, an oncologist as well as a playwright, sets his play between 1930 and 1946 and tells the story of the two brothers who founded Eldorado Mining and Refining. But it wasn’t until a use was found for the by-product of radium refining – uranium - that the world was changed forever. Previews are June 29 & 30 and performances run Tuesday to Saturday until July 24 with an added performance Monday July 19. All performances begin at 6:00 PM.

The wildly successful The Right Road to Pontypool returns to the Winslow farm for another season. Written by Alex Poch-Goldin and directed by Kim Blackwell, this loving chronicle of one man’s sun kissed dream for Toronto’s working class Jews in the early 1900s became a sold-out audience favourite and had the critics calling it “remarkable”, “magnificent” and saying it “should not be missed”. In its heyday, Pontypool, in the heart of Protestant southern Ontario, was a summer haven for thousands of Jewish immigrants, mostly garment workers from Kensington Market. Previews are August 2 & 3 and performances run Tuesday to Saturday until August 28 with an added performance Monday August 23. All performances begin at 6:00 PM.
