4th Line Theatre’s Managing Artistic Director Kim Blackwell invites members of the community to join her and renowned playwright Alison Lawrence to discuss stories, memories and reminiscences of the Farmerettes. These discussions will aid in the development of Lawrence’s play based on Bonnie Sitter and Shirleyan English’s book Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes. 4th Line Theatre is Breaking Ground with The Tilco Strike

4th Line Theatre presents its 17th annual Breaking Ground on Sunday, March 8th at the Peterborough Museum & Archives featuring a free public reading of excerpts from D’Arcy Jenish’s The Tilco Strike. 4th Line is proud to be working on this new project from D’Arcy Jenish, the renowned writer noted for his work with Macleans Magazine and his books about the NHL and FLQ. The Tilco Strike recounts the year-long fight between 50 poorly paid women, and their hard-nosed male bosses at Tilco Plastics in Peterborough, who were determined to crush the women and their union. The strike began in December 1965 over a $25 bonus and escalated into an epic battle between organized labour and strike-breaking employers. The women lost their fight, but changed labour relations in Ontario forever.

 

Peterborough Museum & Archives will host this free event on Sunday, March 8th at 2:00 p.m. and seating is limited.  To reserve a seat call 4th Line Theatre’s Box Office at 705-932-4445. There is plenty of free parking available and the museum is fully accessible. The museum is located on Armour Hill at 300 Hunter Street East in Peterborough.

Volunteer Actors needed for 4th Line Theatre’s 2020 Season

Have you always wanted to act onstage?  Want to be part of an epic outdoor production in your community?  Have you ever wondered how 4th Line productions come to life? Interested in learning new skills and working alongside professional actors, directors and musicians?  4th Line Theatre is looking for volunteers to perform in its productions of Alex Poch-Goldin’s The Great Shadow, directed by Deb Williams and Maja Ardal’s Wishful Seeing, directed by Kim Blackwell, this summer.

 

Auditions and interviews will be held on Saturday, February 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Theatre on King located at 171 King Street, Suite 100 in Peterborugh. People will be seen in order of arrival. Even if you have limited acting experience but are interested in bringing our region’s history to life on stage, consider auditioning. Previous acting experience is not required.

4th Line Theatre’s Emerging Voices Youth Apprenticeship Program receives funding boost from Season Sponsor Nexicom

4th Line Theatre is excited to announce an incredible donation match initiative to fund their youth apprenticeship program for the 2020 Season. Season Sponsor Nexicom will match donations made to between February 3 - March 3, 2020 allowing donors to double the impact of their gift.

4th Line Theatre’s Emerging Voices Youth Apprenticeship Program requires an average of $20,000 in funding annually in order to effectively train youth volunteers.  Donations to this program are used for professional artist fees including workshops, vocal and dialect coaching, acting and movement coaching, choreography and fight direction as well as technical production coaching to benefit youth volunteers.

4th Line Theatre’s Managing Artistic Director Kim Blackwell invites members of the community to join her for an afternoon of hockey-themed stories, memories and reminiscences, with an eye to creating a hockey-themed play in the near future.  Canadian actors and playwrights Paul Braunstein (4th Line’s The Shadow Walk of Millbrook) and Courtenay Stevens are excited to be working with 4th Line to create a play about hockey derived from local stories and memories. 4th Line Theatre is pleased to announce a community play workshop and a public reading of The Orchard written by Ian McLachlan and Robert Winslow. On Saturday, February 1st, 4th Line invites community members, who are interested in acting, to participate in a free theatre acting workshop. 4th Line Theatre today announced the casting for this December’s production of The Fool of Cavan: A Christmas Caper, written by Lindy Finlan and directed by Managing Artistic Director Kim Blackwell. 4th Line is delighted to be presenting this world premiere to the village of Millbrook. With 4th Line’s off-season productions quickly becoming a local tradition, The Fool of Cavan: A Christmas Caper will be a must see for the whole family. This wonderful tale is ideal for all ages and with only nine performances, this holiday play is guaranteed to sell-out quickly.

4th Line Theatre funding Ontario Playwrights

4th Line Theatre, Canada’s premier outdoor theatre company, is pleased to announce it will once again be recommending playwrights to receive funding of between $1,000 and $5,000 to develop new works through the Ontario Arts Council’s Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators program. Ontario-based professional theatre artists and artists’ collectives are eligible to apply to 4th Line Theatre by the closing date of January 17, 2020 at 1:00 pm. The Ontario Arts Council (OAC), an agency of the government of Ontario, is the primary funding body for professional arts activities in the province.

Set in the 1960s in Millbrook, a church congregation is divided when props and costumes for the upcoming Christmas concert go missing. The Needlers, a band comprised of local young people, are accused of being the culprits. Tensions mount and the Needlers take to the streets of Millbrook to solve the mystery and clear their names.

4th Line Theatre today announced the line-up for their second Midsummer Night’s Music Concert.  Taking place on Saturday, August 24th at St. Thomas’s Anglican Church immediately following the performance of Ian McLachlan and Robert Winslow’s Carmel, the concert will include performances by Beau Dixon, Steafan Hannigan, Justin and Mark Hiscox, Jack Nicholsen, Melissa Payne, Jonathan Shatzky and Saskia Tomkins.  The concert will be an extraordinary and intimate night of music by musicians who have been involved in bringing the theatre’s 2019 summer season to life. 4th Line Theatre presents Bloom: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Fable

MILLBROOK, ON…4th Line Theatre is thrilled to present the world premiere of Beau Dixon’s Bloom: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Fable at the Winslow farm this July. Bloom: A Rock ’n’ Roll Fable follows the lives of two small town best friends from Assumption, Ontario, who share a lifelong love affair with rock ’n’ roll music. From their childhood in the 1950s, to the heady music days of the 1970s, Bloom is based on stories collected from some of Peterborough’s most renowned rock and roll personalities. The play will feature original music written by Beau Dixon and others. The barnyard will be rocking for the entire month of July!

4th Line Theatre’s Artist Talk series continues on March 31st with Kim Blackwell in conversation with Justin Hiscox

4th Line Theatre’s yearly Artist Talk series is back and Managing Artistic Director Kim Blackwell will be exploring the fascinating career of 4th Line Theatre’s resident Musical Director, Justin Hiscox. Justin is the musical director for both shows at 4th Line this summer, Bloom: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Fable and Carmel. Blackwell will lead Hiscox through an in-depth discussion, exploring his craft and inspiration for his work. Hiscox and Blackwell have worked on dozens of projects together and will dive deep into their long working relationship at the theatre. This free event will take place at the Peterborough Museum and Archives on Sunday, March 31st, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.

4th Line Theatre is Breaking Ground with "Wishful Seeing"

Millbrook, ON... 4th Line Theatre presents its 16th annual Breaking Ground on Sunday, March 3rd at the Peterborough Museum & Archives featuring a free public reading of excerpts from Maja Ardal’s Wishful Seeing. 4th Line is proud to be working on this new project from Maja Ardal, the renowned playwright responsible for 2016’s wildly popular The Hero of Hunter Street. Wishful Seeing is based on Prince Edward County author Janet Kellough’s book of the same name, part of her Thaddeus Lewis mystery series. The play takes place in Upper Canada in the 1850s as itinerant preacher Thaddeus Lewis investigates a suspicious death on Rice Lake. A classic historical whodunit with all of the laughs and thrills that you would expect from a Maja Ardal play. The workshop will feature a cast of fantastic professional actors including Robert Winslow as Thaddeus Lewis and Maja Ardal’s son Paul Braunstein, best known to 4th Line audiences as JC Lalonde in The Bad Luck Bank Robbers.

4th Line Theatre announces community workshop and public reading of The Moodie Traill

4th Line Theatre is pleased to announce a community play workshop and a public reading of The Moodie Traill written by Tim Etherington, Caron Garside, Susan Spicer and Robert Winslow. On Saturday, February 2nd, 4th Line invites community members, who are interested in acting, to participate in a free theatre acting workshop. The day-long workshop begins at 10:00 a.m. and will culminate in a free public reading of the play at 4:00 p.m. 4th Line Theatre presented the world premiere of The Moodie Traill at the Winslow farm in 1993 and remounted it in 1994.

 

The Moodie Traill is based on Catharine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie’s accounts of survival in the Peterborough and Port Hope area in the 1830s. It is a fascinating story about the challenges faced by early women settlers in the region based on their extensive writings.

Off-Season Programming at 4th Line Theatre funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation

On Friday, December 7th at 6:45 p.m., local MPP Laurie Scott will be at St. Thomas Anglican Church as 4th Line Theatre begins its performance of The Other: A Strange Christmas Tale.  Prior to the show, MPP Scott and Deborah Badmus, an Ontario Trillium Foundation volunteer, will be formally congratulating the theatre company on receiving a three-year, $241,700 Grow grant from OTF in 2017. Funds from the grant are being used to help the popular theatre company develop a total of three holiday-themed plays.

 

“The 4th Line Theatre in Millbrook provides high-quality original live entertainment at a beautiful venue in Cavan Monaghan,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “I am pleased that this grant will enable 4th Line Theatre to bring Millbrook’s interesting history to life through a series of holiday-themed plays.”

4th Line Theatre presents "Who Killed Snow White?" this August at the Farm

MILLBROOK, ON…4th Line Theatre is thrilled to present the world premiere of Judith Thompson’s Who Killed Snow White? It explores the journey of one family to support their daughter, Serena, and her fight to stay strong in the face of bullying and harassment. While the play is not based on actual events, it tells an all too familiar story in the lives of young women. No community is spared of sexual harassment or violence—it is a pressing subject in all of our lives and, while it is often a taboo topic, society can change. The cultural sea has begun to shift, and its resurgence is being spearheaded by a wave of intersectional feminist movements, the #metoo movement, and an increasing willingness to share our stories and make a positive change in society.

MILLBROOK, ON…4th Line Theatre is thrilled to be presenting the remount of Ian McLachlan and Robert Winslow’s Crow Hill: The Telephone Play. When the local country doctor opens the first telephone  service in the area, fifteen-year-old Alice takes on the job of switchboard operator. This decision will direct the course of her life for the next thirty years. It is not long before the potential to make money is clear and into town comes a fast-talking salesman who wants to open a telephone company and bring the town into the modern age. This decision puts him into direct competition and conflict with the doctor and Alice.

Managing Artistic Director Kim Blackwell will be exploring the fascinating careers of 4th Line Theatre’s Founder and Creative Director, Robert Winslow and his long-time collaborator, academic and renowned writer, Ian McLachlan. McLachlan and Winslow co-wrote the much-loved Crow Hill: The Telephone Play, produced by 4th Line in 1997 and 2004. Blackwell will lead McLachlan and Winslow through an in-depth discussion; exploring their craft; and their inspiration for creating this much loved play.  This free event will take place at the Peterborough Museum and Archives at 2:00 p.m.

Millbrook, ON... 4th Line Theatre presents its 15th annual Breaking Ground on Sunday, March 25th at the Peterborough Museum & Archives featuring a free public reading of excerpts from Ian McLachlan and Robert Winslow’s Carmel. 4th Line is proud to be working on this new project from 4th Line Founder and Creative Director Robert Winslow and his longtime writing partner Ian McLachlan. Carmel is the third installment of McLachlan and Winslow’s Barnardo trilogy, following up Doctor Barnardo’s Children which had its world premiere at 4th Line Theatre in 2005 and returned in 2006 and more recently in 2014 and Wounded Soldiers which had its world premiere at 4th Line Theatre in 2014 and was adapted for an indoor presentation for a small Ontario tour in 2016. Carmel follows Barnardo boy Walter White and his family as they struggle to hold onto their southern Ontario farm and way of life during the Great Depression of the early 1930s. The workshop will feature a cast of fantastic professional actors and will include original music composed and arranged by 4th Line resident Music Director Justin Hiscox.

4th Line Theatre launches its 2018 season with a Masquerade Ball in support of the Epic Women’s Directing Project and its Emerging VOICES Program

Millbrook, ON – 4th Line Theatre launches its 2018 season with an evening of masquerade-themed fun, music, drag bingo, food, drinks and dancing at Market Hall Performing Arts Centre in Peterborough on Saturday, April 14th. The masquerade ball fundraiser will feature Peterborough's very own Miss Divalicious and Ms. Madge Enthat who will entertain guests all night with their fabulous drag performances, bingo calling and witty banter. Back by popular demand, the emcees for the evening are beloved 4th Line actors Paul Braunstein and Monica Dottor, who will appear in character as the memorable couple Jean-Claude and Marie from Alex Poch-Goldin’s The Bad Luck Bank Robbers.

Millbrook, ON... 4th Line Theatre is pleased to announce a community play workshop and public reading of Robert Winslow’s Welcome Death. On Saturday, February 3rd, 4th Line invites community members, who are interested in acting, to participate in a free theatre workshop. The day-long workshop begins at 10:00 a.m. and will culminate in a free public reading of the play. 4th Line Theatre presented the world premiere of Welcome Death in August 2009 at the Winslow farm.

Join 4th Line Theatre to celebrate the holiday season in The Village

Millbrook, ON...On Friday, December 8th, 2017, 4th Line Theatre invites the public to celebrate the holiday season at 4th Line in The Village — a free event at the St. Thomas Anglican Church in Millbrook. 4th Line will be presenting excerpts from The Other: A Strange Christmas Tale by celebrated Canadian playwright Beverley Cooper, a new play in development. Following the reading, there will be carolling of traditional Christmas carols led by 4th Line’s Resident Musical Director, Justin Hiscox.

4th Line Theatre funding Ontario playwrights

4th Line Theatre, Canada’s premier outdoor theatre company, is pleased to announce it will once again be recommending playwrights to receive funding of between $1,000 and $5,000 to develop new works through the Ontario Arts Council’s Recommender Grants for Theatre Creators program. Ontario-based professional theatre artists and artists’ collectives are eligible to apply to 4th Line Theatre by the closing date of January 12, 2018. The Ontario Arts Council (OAC), an agency of the government of Ontario, is the primary funding body for professional arts activities in the province.

4th Line Theatre announces its 27th Season

4th Line Theatre’s Managing Artistic Director Kim Blackwell is thrilled to announce the theatre’s 27th summer season. The season will begin on July 3, 2018 with the return of a much-loved 4th Line favourite, Crow Hill: The Telephone Play, written by Ian McLachlan and Robert Winslow and directed by Deb Williams. Audiences will remember Williams as one of the lead actors in the 2017 summer season.  In August, 4th Line is proud to present the world premiere of Judith Thompson’s highly anticipated play Who Killed Snow White? Directed by Kim Blackwell, this play is part of the theatre’s Canadian Pulse series, which features plays that explore issues Canadian’s are struggling to understand.

4th Line Theatre are proud recipients of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock Canada 150 Award

Millbrook, ON... 4th Line Theatre is pleased to announce that the not-for-profit performing arts organization was selected by regional Member of Parliament, Jamie Schmale, to receive the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock Canada 150 Award. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada’s confederation, Mr. Schmale called for nominations to recognize the individuals and organizations who “play an outstanding and active role within our community.” Nominations were submitted over the past two months and in early September, 4th Line Theatre was named as one of eight recipients from the township of Cavan Monaghan.

4th Line Theatre secures the rights to adapt Janet Kellough’s novel “Wishful Seeing”

Millbrook, ON...4th Line Theatre is pleased to announce that it has reached an agreement with writer Janet Kellough to adapt her historical murder mystery novel “Wishful Seeing” for the stage.  This world premiere adaptation which will be written by 4th Line Theatre playwright-in-residence Maja Ardal and will be based on Kellough’s 2016 novel “Wishful Seeing” which was shortlisted for the 2017 Arthur Ellis Award for Excellence in Crime Writing. Ardal, who has a fascinating career as a playwright, actor and director, was the writer of The Hero of Hunter Street which had its sold-out world premiere as part of 4th Line Theatre’s 25th Anniversary season.

Millbrook, ON...4th Line Theatre is thrilled to be presenting the world premiere of Robert Winslow’s The History of Drinking in Cavan, which will make its debut on the theatre’s stage on August 7th, 2017. The History of Drinking in Cavan peers into the history of alcohol consumption and its prohibition within the Cavan-Monaghan Township for the past 200 years until present day. Beginning with his research in 2010, as a part of his Chalmers Fellowship, 4th Line Founder and Creative Director Robert Winslow’s The History of Drinking in Cavan will culminate the 2017 summer season in this tragic and whimsical production.

4th Line Theatre presents the world premiere of Bombers: Reaping the Whirlwind

4th Line Theatre is thrilled to be presenting the world premiere of David S. Craig’s Bombers: Reaping the Whirlwind, which will kick off the theatre’s 26th Summer Season on July 4th.  Bombers is the story of young Peter Benton, a Canadian heavy bomber pilot who flew, the flak and fighter filled skies, over Germany during WWII. Drawing directly from the experiences of Canadian flight crews, Bombers places the audience directly into the training, the camaraderie, the passion and ultimately into a Lancaster bomber as the young crew of Canadian boys drop their bombs over the burning fires of ‘the big city’ – Berlin.

Kim Blackwell in conversation with David Ferry

 Millbrook, ON... 4th Line Theatre’s yearly Artist Talk series is back and Managing Artistic Director Kim Blackwell will be exploring the fascinating career of actor and director, David Ferry. Ferry is the director of Bombers: Reaping the Whirlwind which will have its world premiere at 4th Line Theatre this summer. Blackwell will lead Ferry through an in depth discussion, exploring his career and craft.  This free event will take place at the Peterborough Museum and Archives on Sunday, April 2nd, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. rsonal experiences, recollections and photographs.

4th Line Theatre is Breaking Ground with Who Killed Snow White?

Millbrook, ON... 4th Line Theatre presents its 14th annual Breaking Ground on Sunday, March 5th at the Peterborough Museum & Archives featuring a free public reading of excerpts from Judith Thompson’s Who Killed Snow White? 4th Line is proud to be working on this new project from renowned playwright Judith Thompson. Who Killed Snow White? is a poignant and unflinching exploration of cyberbullying in small town Canada. It dives deep into the heart of our culture to examine the roots of sexual violence. Judith Thompson has a history of tackling difficult subject material surrounding longstanding stereotypes in the Canadian cultural landscape. She is an artist unafraid to challenge societal norms, and all of her work has challenged audiences to engage in thoughtful consideration of contemporary issues.  The play is a fictional scenario depicting an incident of school and cyber bullying leading to an extreme case of sexual violence.
